Valley View Mall – Oh The Memories!
Work crews still haven’t finished hauling off the remains of Dallas’ Valley View mall, but the tear down of the vacant shopping center is already having an impact on the neighborhood.
“It definitely helps,” said Jim Wilson of investor Goddard Investment Group, which owns two office buildings just west of Valley View. “The public is responding to the fact that something is finally happening here.”
Starting in 2012, developers and city officials launched an effort to replace the failing Valley View mall with a $4 billion mixed-use development called Dallas Midtown. After years of planning and redevelopment proposals, the project stalled in 2017, leaving the partially demolished and mostly vacant mall.
Earlier this year, work resumed to knock down the 1970s shopping mall. All but one small section that houses a movie theater is being removed to the landfill.
Nearby property owners couldn’t be happier to finally see the derelict shopping center gone.
“There have been so many false starts,” Wilson said. “But the good news is that something positive is happening there.”
Goddard Investments owns the nearby Crossings office complex on LBJ Freeway and has been renovating the property.
“We spent about $3.5 million on our buildings,” Wilson said. “We’ve gotten good leasing activity.
“The market has confidence that something is finally happening with Valley View.”
